First, if I truly believe I will be flooded out of my home, I am going to pack up and drive north. The story overall was pretty good, but I had a few problems with it. One family and their neighbor have decided to build a large boat and float out. Many families build homemade boats - they are called Raft People. However, the government is insisting everything is ok, so many people do not leave until it's too late. This story will remind you that we are a species built for survival and no matter at what point we’re at in the journey and what circumstances we encounter…we’ll all float on alright! Very inspiring.īecause of global warming and a drilling accident that taps into an underground sea, sea levels around the world are rising and forcing people from their homes. Liz goes from an awkward and sometimes troubled teen that was thrust into a world experiencing its own alteration, to a woman now helping others come full circle through her work.

I found Raft People to be a journey of resilience a metamorphosis of sorts.

You watch their faith develop though they don’t recognize it as such and observe how our coping mechanisms work. In fact you get involved you forget that its fiction and only hope that the characters find healing. We listen to accounts of how natural disasters seem to be getting worse as the years past which make this story totally plausible and believable. There’s only this living on the edge of fear at all times…a life lived in suspicion.Īnyone who has lived through a natural disaster knows that nothing is too far fetched. There was no longer any security in anything. What I experienced through the characters was an end to their world as they knew it. When looking at the genre of this book post-apocalyptic fiction the first thought… at least for me, was that it will project similar to the end of world type movies but it’s none of that. Through her intuition and ingenuity there is in fact a tale to tell.Īuthor of ‘Raft People’ ML Katz really drew me in with this story. It is during this account that we get to see the real hero Liz’s mother Leah. We see that somewhere during the fifteen years after the ‘Big Flood’ Liz became a therapist to the survivors but her actual healing didn’t begin until she was asked to develop a narrative of what happened some fifteen years past. The fear was real the pain was real… and you felt that- each time you listened to an account of the story. The lead character in Raft People Liz, gave me an insider’s glimpse of perhaps how the persons of old felt. I always wondered how it was, as not much detail was given to the human element of the story other than they were warned the lead character listened and his family along with animal pairings were saved. As I read Raft People my mind went back to the story of Noah’s Ark.
